Curtains for the kitchen with a balcony door
Kitchens in apartment buildings often have access to a loggia, it becomes a kind of continuation of a small space. This is quite convenient, but users have to find an effective method of decorating a balcony door. The choice of sets of curtains is diverse. To find the optimal solution, we suggest using the recommendations of the experts.
Views
Curtains enhance the kitchen interior. In rooms with a balcony, they perform a number of important tasks:
- they close a bulky white glass unit, which is often smeared with mortar and covered with cracks since the time of renovation;
- hide the plastic window sill;
- mask the heating radiator, which does not add beauty to the room in any way, especially if the eyeliner is top.
And most importantly, curtains distract attention from the cluttered balcony, which most homeowners use as a place to store unnecessary things.... There are several popular types of curtains.
Classic
Different types of fabrics can be used to make classic curtains. It is better to make the choice in favor of a material that can withstand the adverse influences inevitable in the kitchen area. Such curtains harmoniously fit into the traditional design, they never go out of trend and look appropriate in any situation. The advantage of such models is that they allow you to fully disguise the radiator under the windowsill.
However, the curtains will have to be constantly pushed aside to go out onto the loggia. This leads to the fact that the material will experience stress - this is the most unfavorable effect on the condition of the curtains.
In addition, window textiles in classic designs look rather bulky, so they are not suitable for small kitchens.
Roman
Short Roman curtains combine the laconicism of traditional curtains and the ergonomics of blinds, because they are considered the best choice for any kitchen. Such a structure is fixed to the cornice and looks like a strip of matter; when it rises, it folds in large flounces. A weighting agent is attached from below, due to this, the curtains in the expanded form keep an even geometric shape.
For sewing Roman curtains, natural and artificial canvases are used. Artificial textiles are optimal for kitchen units with access to the balcony. Such curtains are usually fastened in sections - the first above the window, the second above the door.
If the kitchen is located on the south side, it is better to choose dense fabrics. They provide effective protection from direct sunlight. In all other situations, in the kitchen with a door to the loggia, there is a lack of natural insolation, therefore thin fabrics with impurities of cotton or viscose are needed there - they do not create obstacles in the path of light.
Roll
Roll-up models are no less in demand for installation in kitchens. They rise freely and thereby open up access to the balcony. These curtains are made in two versions.
- Classic Is a smooth canvas. When these curtains are lifted, folds are formed - from the side it looks restrained, but elegant and organic.
- Cascading - have folds. Even at maximum opening, they descend like a cascade, creating the feeling of an airy drapery. Such curtains are organic in classic designs, as well as in kitchens stylized as Provence, country or Art Deco.
With lambrequins
Curtains with lambrequins can change even the simplest interior in a matter of minutes. They look especially stylish in tandem with weighted curtains. But if the kitchen is small, then it is better to use discreet lambrequins. In addition, such a solution is absolutely not suitable for high-tech, modern and minimalist rooms. But in the classic design, they will be very appropriate.
With eyelets
In recent years, grommet textiles have become widespread. In this case, long curtains are fixed to the cornice by means of eyelets sewn to the upper part of the canvas. This is a good idea for rooms with a door to a loggia, since the curtains do not interfere with the smooth opening of the doors and do not require any specialized fixtures for installation.
To visually raise the ceiling, the rounded cornice is usually fixed as close to the ceiling as possible and the curtains are fixed to it. If desired, such textiles are collected in air folds on both sides of the window opening.
The design looks very elegant, non-trivial and harmoniously combined with the classic design.
Materials (edit)
Keep in mind, any kitchen space encounters contamination - soot accumulates here, splashes of oil and grease scatter, and there is a high concentration of steam. Therefore, the material used for sewing curtains, must be extremely resistant to wear. It is also recommended to choose canvases that do not absorb food odors.
There is no need to buy overly massive curtains for the kitchen or, conversely, thin ones. Taking into account the fact that fire often burns on the kitchen stove, preference should be given to models made of non-combustible cloth.
It is recommended to avoid the following types of curtains:
- from cotton fabric or crocheted - after a couple of washes, they will completely lose all their decorative effect;
- velvet curtains - they quickly accumulate odors.
In order for the curtains to be durable, it is worth giving preference to fabrics with the presence of polymer fibers. They are easy to wash, and after cleaning they do not require smoothing.
Tulle
Tulle curtains are considered a classic solution; they are of several types.
- Net - allows air and UV rays to pass through. However, it is undesirable to use it in the kitchen area, since this material actively absorbs any pollution.
- Veil - beautiful fabric, beautifully draped and lays down with light folds. Differs in high wear resistance, suitable for use in the kitchen.
- Organza - practical fabric. Washes well, dries very quickly, does not require ironing. It does not particularly absorb dust, moreover, it has a democratic price. The only drawback is that the fabric is poorly permeable to air, so when airing the curtain will have to be pushed back.
Thread
Thread curtains are better known as muslin or noodles. They are relevant for decorating small windows in small kitchens... Such curtains are made in the form of elongated thin threads - it looks elegant and unusual. Kiseya made of threads visually adds volume to the kitchen and as if raises the ceiling, bringing the general feeling of warmth and light. The plus is the ease of maintenance.
The design of muslin can be different.... It can be fixed from one end using decorative potholders, or it can be divided into two halves and fixed on both sides of the opening. A loose curtain, which covers the entire window, looks good. In stores, filament curtains are offered in a wide shade palette, which opens up additional ideas for decorating the kitchen. If you wish, you can take nude shades, laconic white or multi-colored models; threads with a soft gradient have been in great demand in recent years.
Cotton
Cotton is famous for its democratic price. This material is breathable, hypoallergenic, and also retains its color and shape well after repeated washings. However, these curtains fade quickly. - if the balcony faces the east or south sides, such canvases quickly lose their original gloss.
Linen
Strong, wear-resistant and hypoallergenic fabric, but quite expensive. In addition, the material burns out under the rays of the sun, after washing it does not always retain its color and is hardly smoothed out. For the kitchen, this option is used very rarely.
Silk
These are truly elegant and chic curtains. However, silk is capricious in service. The material gets dirty quickly, so its use in the kitchen block is unjustified.
Wool
Relatively durable material with good ability to transmit light and air. But it easily absorbs odors and moisture from the steam. In addition, wool is very capricious in its care; it is rarely used in kitchens.
Viscose
By its characteristics, viscose resembles silk or cotton. It is a soft canvas that does not fade in the sun... But it must be borne in mind that kitchen textiles have to be constantly washed, and this material, upon contact with moisture, shrinks, quickly crumples and loses its strength.
Modal
Modern wood fiber based material. Eco-friendly and hypoallergenic, breathable, durable... Does not wrinkle or shrink when washing. But it is expensive, because not every our compatriot can afford such a solution for the kitchen.
Acetate
In appearance, acetate is similar to silk - it is an elastic material, it does not fade or wrinkle, it drapes perfectly. However, this matter accumulates static well, therefore, in the kitchen, where there are a lot of household appliances, such curtains are not recommended.
Design
Curtains have always been an important element of the interior, no matter what functional room they are in. Curtains can become an effective accent in the design or act as a continuation of the wall. The color scheme of the curtains for the kitchen must be chosen so that they are combined with a kitchen apron, cladding, furniture and kitchen textiles.
Life hack: If you have purchased curtains of a rich color scheme, which is not present anywhere else in the kitchen, buy ribbons of the same color and wrap them around the parts of the sconce, the console of the bar counter, as well as the legs of the furniture. Believe me, the energy spent on work will more than pay off with the eccentricity of the trendy interior.
It is not at all necessary that the entire balcony block be covered by a single solid canvas.
You can combine a couple of curtains that are different in print and saturation. In the place of their intersection, a rather interesting composition can turn out.
In recent years, interior trends have advocated asymmetry, and a window with a loggia literally begs for a similar design. Slanting curtains in combination with traditional rectangular models are a very good idea. Decorating the kitchen window with access to the loggia also allows the use of canvases of various colors, located asymmetrically.
If there is no room for an accent wall in the kitchen, a 3D printed photo net can play its role. Perspective images visually expand the balcony space and thereby enlarge the compact kitchen space. Such curtains look very stylish - this is not surprising, because absolutely any pattern can be printed on the canvas.
How to choose?
Keep in mind that the flow of light in a kitchen with a loggia is less than in rooms where the window looks directly onto the street. This means that darkened curtains will not be a good solution - they will darken the kitchen even more. It is advisable to give preference to nude shades with transparent as well as translucent textures.
Curtains, the design of which does not create obstacles to the exit to the loggia, will be a good solution. Overly dense curtains that close the exit from ceiling to floor are not suitable for this. If they are often pushed aside, then after a couple of months they will lose their aesthetic appearance.
When choosing curtains for a window with a balcony door, do not forget that a battery is often attached under the window. Usually it has the most unpresentable appearance. In this case, the curtains must completely cover such radiators.
Remember that all kitchen textiles will be much more dirty due to the presence of soot, dirt, grease drips and high humidity. In addition, some fabrics absorb kitchen aromas - these factors should be taken into account when buying linen. The most successful solution would be ordinary textiles without lace, the fabric should be strong, washable and quick-drying.
Thus, the curtains for the kitchen with access to the loggia must meet the basic requirements:
- do not block the exit to the balcony;
- do not cling to surrounding things;
- represent a general composition with the general decor of the kitchen;
- provide unhindered access to the kitchen for rays of light and air flow.
How to hang?
In recent years, when installing suspended ceilings, it has become fashionable not to bring the canvas to the wall, but to leave a small niche. In the future, a cornice is fixed in it, invisible to the outside eye. Thus, when suspended, there is a feeling of a web streaming from above. If such a ceiling is not provided for by the kitchen layout, then the fastening of the curtains can be decorated with a baguette with a cornice. Curtains with eyelets look organic on a rounded wall cornice - they are put on immediately on the cornices. But curtains on a curtain tape look most harmonious in a compact space.
To freely go out onto the loggia, you can cut the curtain into two halves and grab the curtains with grabs or garters just below the middle.
