The choice of curtains for the balcony is a difficult matter, you have to take into account the shade solution, texture, cornice and type of fittings. Most people prefer tulle. It is light, airy and at the same time practical material.

Peculiarities

Finding curtains for the balcony is not as easy as it seems at first glance. It is not enough to find an option suitable for the tint palette and texture. It is important that the curtains protect from prying eyes, create a feeling of warmth and comfort, and, moreover, do not interfere with the penetration of sunlight into the living quarters. Tulle meets all these requirements - it is used on balconies equipped as additional living space, a lounge area or a study.

For several centuries, people have come up with many different types of curtains for balconies and windows.

Any model can organically fit into every room, especially since modern manufacturers show great creativity in the selection of shapes, textures and colors. However, designers are inclined to think that it is most reasonable to use tulle for a loggia.

Its advantages are obvious - tulle is presented in a wide variety of colors and prints. In this case, you can always create horizontal and vertical draperies on the canvas.

In addition, tulle hides the view of the premises from the street - this is especially true when it comes to balconies and loggias located on the lower floors. However, tulle protects the balcony from outside views only in the daytime. In the dark, when the light is on on the loggia, these curtains do not provide the necessary privacy - from the side you will see everything that happens on the balcony. Therefore, tulle should be combined with thick curtains.

If the balcony is located on the north or north-west side, then light tulle will perform all concealing functions, but will not interfere with the natural light of the room. The stream of light passes through such a canvas without interference. At the same time, it hides an unsightly view from the window and, in general, gives the additional space a feeling of coziness and warmth.

But the main advantage of any tulle curtain is its visual lightness. It takes up very little space and does not overload the interior. This is especially true in a limited space of 6 meters, when literally every centimeter counts. Such a design will give lightness and elegance even to an unpretentious interior, sheathed with clapboard.

Species overview

In modern stores, tulle is presented in several forms.

Organza

This fabric is obtained by twisting the threads. The material is almost transparent, but quite sturdy. The only drawback of such a material is that the fabric does not allow air to pass through, therefore, when ventilating the balcony, it has to be moved.

Net

The most successful solution for decorating a window inside a balcony block. It is a canvas with many small holes, depending on the model, they are round or square.

The advantage of such a fabric is that it easily allows air and light to pass through.

However, the mesh accumulates dust and has to be washed frequently. And if the loggia goes to a busy highway, then this will have to be done at least once a month. Such a mesh can be combined with curtains, but it will also be appropriate as an independent element.

Veil

The material is not as transparent as organza, but just as delicate and tactilely pleasant. Perfectly transmits rays of light and air, while blocking the view of the street from the outside. However, matter quickly crumples. However, for loggias, this drawback is not so significant.

Selection Tips

Modern manufacturers offer a wide range of tulle models. To make the right choice, you need to take into account the characteristics of each particular balcony or loggia. Of fundamental importance is the floor on which it is located, the location and size of the window, the presence of the window sill, the way of glazing, as well as the total footage of the additional space.

It is necessary to select curtains taking into account all these factors.

For example, when the window sill extends far beyond the wall, shortened curtains will be the best solution. They will not bulge. In addition, such curtains look as concise as possible, which is especially important when it comes to compact balconies. For loggias and balconies, which are often ventilated, Roman blinds will be the best choice; they can be fixed on each frame leaf separately.

Classic full-wall models are good for balconies with panoramic glazing. They allow you to cover unwanted view from all sides. Such a solution will not "eat up" the overall space and make the interior heavier.

The choice of drapery also influences the visual perception. So, horizontal folds visually expand the small-sized balcony. Vertical masonry makes a long narrow balcony more organic.

The color of the curtains is important. Dark and printed models are relevant for balconies located on the east and south sides - they are well lit most of the day. In the north and northwest direction, such patterns will create severe darkening in the living area. There it is worth making a choice in favor of light colors.

And, of course, special attention should be paid to the practical component. If you use roll-up models with a collection and opening mechanism, then you do not have to touch them with your hands all the time.

Accordingly, they will be less dirty. But draped canvases with horizontal drapery will accumulate dust - such curtains will have to be knocked out and washed all the time, so you should make sure that they are sewn from an easily cleanable and quick-drying fabric.

The material should not wrinkle or shrink after wet cleaning. Curtains with vertical folds are a good solution. They also collect dust, but you can clean them right on the window without removing the canvas.

Special attention should be paid to the flammability parameters of tulle. Unfortunately, residents of multi-storey buildings are often faced with the fact that the inhabitants of the apartments located above throw half-smoked cigarettes into the windows - sometimes they do not reach the ground and end up on other people's balconies. In order to minimize the risk of fire, when choosing tulle, preference should be given to materials that do not support combustion. These requirements are met by fabrics with a high percentage of synthetic fibers - when in contact with fire, they melt, but do not give off fire.

Accommodation ideas

Designers offer several recommendations for placing tulle curtains on balcony windows.

  • Use tacks on extended curtains, they allow you to easily and quickly move the tulle aside if necessary.
  • Be sure to use all kinds of accessories - hairpins, ribbons or magnets. They allow you to make draperies, thanks to which a comfortable atmosphere is maintained in the room.
  • When arranging balconies, it is better to take not a solid canvas, but separate strips. This will make it easier to ventilate and allow you to change the decor of the window if desired.

How to hang on the balcony?

Choosing a curtain of the right size and type of model for the balcony is by no means the only problem. An important question, which often arises among the owners of small loggias and balconies, is associated with the technique of fastening the tulle. Several methods can be used to fix the canvas on the space above the window.

With cornice

One of the simplest methods. All that is required from the owner of such a room is simply to pick up the cornices of the model and design you like, fix this structure over the window and place a curtain on it.

However, this method can only be used in a situation where there is sufficient space from the window frame to the ceiling slab.

If it is not technically possible to hang a ceiling or wall cornice, you can turn to alternative solutions.

With string suspension

A practical way would be a string suspension. This kit includes steel wire, mounting angles and spring plates. Such a design takes up very little space, and you can hang tulle on it in a matter of minutes with your own hands.

With hooks

If the window reaches the ceiling, then plastic or metal hooks can be attached to the sides of it. To hang the curtain, loops are made along the edges of the canvas and put on the hooks in such a way that the fabric is stretched. If you are going to make folds, then you should strengthen the canvas with several hooks, fixing them on the elements of the window frame.

With adhesive tape

Directly on the glass unit, the curtain can be glued to the fabric Velcro, it is a tape with an adhesive side. You can buy it in every store that sells fabrics and household goods. This is a budgetary and, moreover, low-cost method, it can be used for any model of curtains and curtains.

Beautiful examples

When choosing a tulle model for a loggia, be sure to pay attention to the color scheme of the material. The stores sell a variety of colors - from deep dark to translucent nude.

  • Light colors are in great demand - they do not burden the compact space and at the same time fill the balcony with light and a feeling of airiness.
  • If the loggia is adjacent to the bedroom, it makes sense to dwell on pink or peach colors. In the rooms on the south side, lilac tones are organic, curtains of green and blue shades look good.
  • For design in the style of minimalism, plain tulle is suitable.
  • Fans of laconic decor can try to combine black and white colors.
  • Tulle curtains can be long or short, straight, semicircular, some models have ties in the center. Depending on the style of the room, tulle can be lush or single-layer.

Care rules

The tulle on the loggia is exposed to constant exposure to direct ultraviolet rays. In such conditions, over time, it begins to turn yellow and deform. In addition, the fabric has to retain all the dirt coming from the street, so it becomes unaesthetic.

  • In order for the curtains to retain their impeccable appearance for a long time, they need to be properly looked after. So, it is recommended to wash the curtains at least once a quarter.
  • Before washing, the material should be thoroughly shaken out of accumulated dust and, if possible, knocked out.
  • A good effect is given by soaking in salt water before immersion in the washing machine - this way you can remove yellowness.
  • It is necessary to wash the tulle in a gentle mode, it is advisable to immerse the curtain in a pillowcase or a special bag. The water temperature should not exceed 30 °, the speed should be set to minimum.
  • After washing, the cloth is hung unfolded so that no creases appear during the drying process.

Keep in mind that mistakes in washing and drying will cause the thin tulle to wrinkle and look like a rag.
