Curtains play a key role in the interior. They are able to radically change the appearance of any room, and a loggia or balcony will not be an exception. But due to the level of lighting, the greater likelihood of temperature drops and the small size of the room, the choice and installation of curtains on the balcony will be slightly different from similar processes in other rooms.

Mount selection

Before hanging tulle or curtains on the balcony, you need to choose them and decide how they will be attached. Dense, heavy fabrics are something that is best avoided in such a small room. Organza, silk, linen and cotton will fit perfectly. Loggia curtains must meet the following requirements:

  • resistance to direct sunlight;
  • material resistance to temperature extremes;
  • the material should be easy to clean;
  • the fastening system should not weigh much;
  • curtains and their fastening should not interfere with the opening of windows.

In all these respects, the 3 most convenient options for a loggia and a balcony:

  • roller blinds;
  • Roman curtains;
  • blinds.

The materials from which they are made most often calmly endure life on the balcony, and the fastening system of many models does not require a cornice, it involves fastening directly to the balcony window, mounting on an adhesive base above it, or installing a special cassette. There is also the usual format of fasteners, implying drilling.

In the case of blinds, the illumination level control system is also convenient by turning the slats. There is such an option in roller blinds of those models, the fabric of which consists of alternating strips of dense and transparent fabrics. Roller blinds, in addition, are as easy to clean as possible - it is enough to wipe them with a cloth.

Roman shades with their soft folds can be considered as an intermediate option between the above systems and classic shades.

Unfortunately, It is far from always possible to find blinds or roll materials on the free sale that are ideally suited in size. It is likely that they will have to be made to order, and this promises additional costs. In addition to this problem, it can be placed that some variants of the same blinds should be installed exclusively by a professional - not everyone can cope with the process on their own.

If these options do not suit you for one reason or another, then you will have to think about how to hang ordinary curtains on it without taking up a lot of precious balcony space. The first thing that comes to mind is, of course, the cornice.

How to fix on the cornice?

The cornice itself is an important part of the interior. Therefore, his choice should not be considered something secondary. Now, on order, you can make a cornice of any size and appearance that suits you. The length of the cornice is calculated as follows: allowances of about 25 cm are added to the width of the window, plus the size of the tips of the cornice and 6 cm of free space. Cornices are of several types.

  • Rods - a rod mounted on consoles. There are models designed for several layers of curtains. Weight, length, appearance of rod curtain rods depend on what material the structure is made of.
  • Telescopic. In fact, sliding models are rod curtain rods with the ability to adjust their length.
  • Baguette is a massive, and therefore not very suitable option for a balcony. In them, the functional part is covered with a wooden plank.
  • Profile - mounted to the ceiling, consist of guides with rollers. For a balcony, such cornices are good because they are not striking.
  • String - cornices with a completely different design.The rod is replaced by a strong fishing line or metal wire.

The next parameter that needs to be taken into account is the material of the cornice. It should be resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations, strong, durable and ideally lightweight. The last criterion is fully met by plastic curtain rods.

They are also inexpensive and a pleasure to clean. But you can't call them durable - they can fade corny, although they tolerate temperature changes calmly.

Wooden curtain rods have moisture problems. But the advantages of the tree are environmental friendliness, ease of installation, excellent appearance. If the balcony is heated, and even more so if it is combined with the room into a single space, a wooden cornice is an excellent option.

Eaves made of stainless steel and forged materials can be significantly more expensive than plastic ones. But this is justified by their long service life and a variety of designs. Slightly less durable, but also less expensive aluminum curtain rods. Their weight is small, and they go through the ups and downs of the weather without problems.

There are a lot of options for cornices now. There are even options that can be mounted without drilling on spacers. They are suitable, however, only for light curtains, but in the case when the installation of a conventional cornice is impossible, they can help out.

other methods

Do not be discouraged if it is not possible to install even a spacer cornice. There are other ways to hang curtains on the balcony with your own hands. This is not so difficult to do - everything you need now is not difficult to purchase in any specialized store. It is only important to take into account all the features of the room, namely: its size, temperature regime, high humidity, and you can easily decorate it with curtains you like, complementing the design that can become a wonderful accent.

The easiest, but by no means the most convenient way to use, is to fasten the curtains with adhesive tape. You can fix it on the curtains yourself, or you can find a ready-made version on sale. Velcro curtains work in a similar way. But it will not be very convenient to open a window with such a curtain - there is a big risk that the curtains will simply fall off. There are more reliable options that can help you realize your ideas.

On rails or string

For this option, you need to have a special fold on the curtain where you can pass the string. You can sew such curtains yourself, it will not be difficult. You can use a curtain with eyelets with such fasteners. You can attach the curtains to a string, twine, fishing line, wire or a piece of cable, rail.

The required string length is the width of the canvas plus 20-30 cm. Nails are driven into the wall at the window opening from above, the line is threaded through the curtain, and the ends of the line are fixed on the nails.

On hooks

For narrow openings, wall hooks are a good option. They should be fixed above the window, and loops should be attached to the curtain itself according to the number of hooks. Hooks can be used self-adhesive (the main thing is that they fit in weight), ordinary furniture or self-tapping screws with a hook at the end. The version with eyelets does not fit well: there is a high risk that the fixation will not be reliable enough, and the frequency of the hooks will be more difficult to comply with. By the way, on 2 large hooks you can fix the bar and get a homemade cornice.

On the hinge

When attached to hooks, the loops on the curtains are no less important than the hooks themselves. The easiest way to organize them is to buy a special curtain tape. Such tapes have 2 rows of loops and a convenient adjusting cord that allows you to change the number and frequency of folds, and most importantly - the width of the curtain.... Of course, you can not bother with the tape, but simply sew twine loops to the curtain or make them from thick threads, but this will take more time, and the appearance of the finished product may turn out to be less accurate.
